Pearce Acts to Enhance Native American Housing

Press Release

Date: March 27, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce introduced reauthorization of the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act of 1996 (NAHASDA).

"Today, I introduced a NAHASDA reauthorization, which provides much-needed support to our Native American communities," said Pearce. "In addition to reauthorizing critical components of the current law, my bill makes pragmatic updates that will provide tribes nationwide with greater flexibility and simplification when working to meet their housing needs.

"What separates my legislation from previous reauthorizations, and the original law, is the inclusion of a demonstration project, which will allow Native American communities to access and partner with private industry more fluidly than ever before. This was inspired by the successes of similar programs within the Department of Defense, and I am hopeful that this program will help lead to greater homeownership and economic opportunity for Native Americans."

Nationwide, Congressman Pearce's proposal has gained outspoken recognition and support from Native American leaders:

"The National American Indian Housing Council (NAIHC) has worked with Rep. Pearce on this important legislation. He understands the challenges and needs within Native American communities. Rep. Pearce's bill takes proactive steps to improve the current law to make it more effective for those who depend on this program. Considering the short legislative calendar for the remainder of the 113th Congress and the mid-term elections, NAIHC urges swift passage of reauthorization legislation."

-Native American Indian Housing Council Chairwoman Cheryl Causley

"Congressman Pearce understands the urgent need to address the housing crisis in Indian Country, which has had such harmful consequences to our communities. His legislation represents a major improvement in the law and is something we look forward to working on in hopes of passage this year."

-Pueblo of Acoma Governor Fred S. Vallo, Sr.

"On behalf of the Pueblo of Isleta, thank you for agreeing to sponsor a House bill to reauthorize the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996. The passage of NAHASDA Reauthorization is vital to meeting the housing needs of low income Indian families. Your hard work and effort to bring innovate means of housing finance is very much appreciated."

-Pueblo of Isleta Governor E. Paul Torres
